Leidos UK operates as a country focused business, operating today in the Defence and Civil market sectors. Comprising c. 1,000 staff it operates in 3 Divisions: Civil, Logistics and Defence. The Logistics Division is focused on our marquee LCS(T) contract with the MoD while the Civil Division provides a range of IT services in long term relationships with critical national infrastructure clients such as NATS, Ministry of Justice, Home Office, Metropolitan Police and the Scottish Government.

The Leidos UK Defence Division has been created in order to significantly grow Leidos’ position in the UK Defence sector separate to its significant MoD Logistics contract.  Our vision is to become a lead enabler of information-led warfighting for the MoD, and allied organisations, through IT and engineering services delivered with detailed domain expertise. Initial focus areas are C4ISR, MoD ISS, MoD SP & CBRN.

We aim to double in size by 2025 while sustaining strong operating margins by offering cutting-edge mission-enabling IT, science and engineering services into the MoD and allied organisations unencumbered by broader platform and product positions, leveraging our UK capability  supplemented with US pull-through to deliver collaborative customer relationships supporting our client’s core mission.

Our current areas of capability expertise include system integration, infrastructure, cloud, service management, application integration and development delivered within domain insight into services and solutions for Defence Intelligence, tactical data link users and army tactical information systems.

To support our growth we are seeking to appoint talented new individuals to strengthen the Divisional team, stimulate new customer demand and grow our capability, capacity and maturity as we fulfil our growth agenda.

Role

Reporting to the Defence Delivery and Operations Director, the Defence Software Lead will be responsible for establishing the new business venture of a UK Defence agile software capability, compatible with and accelerated by existing Leidos Software Factory capability in the US and Australia.

This specialist software leadership role will be responsible for significantly expanding and updating our defence software capability building a SecDevOps capability leveraging Leidos’ preferred CI/CD toolset and frameworks. The role will include team recruitment, software solution delivery, solution tooling and secure collaborative operating processes (working with the Leidos Centres of Excellence and Leidos Technical Core Competencies leads on best practice).  Furthermore, the Software Lead will provide delivery leadership for the software capability, supporting customer on-boarding, customer proposal generation (including any marketing and sales effort), software service support integration, meeting the internal annual operating plan and be the champion of technical or procedural roadmaps and team skill growth.

The software lead will be responsible for maintaining the business’ software capability strategy to ensure enduring profitable growth.

The software lead will ensure their assigned team members are performance managed, balancing activity utilisation  and creative freedom, to and able to execute successfully on their assigned tasks, triggering recruitment, retention, training or transfer actions to manage capacity and skill base, as appropriate.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborative, scalable, load balanced, technical platform design and implementation
  • Agile methodology, architecture, toolsets, patterns, estimating and software quality processes
  • Technical leadership, rounded to meet the charismatic and entrepreneurial needs of a business start-up
  • Flexibility to meet customer and business requirements
  • Passionate about technology and building high performance teams

Experience expected:

  • Technical leadership, leading, coaching and developing high-performance software development teams
  • Experience of DevOps or SecDevOps practices, Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery and Jenkins
  • Proven track record of delivering to multiple concurrent customers
  • Experience of running a development centre and development teams
  • Advanced knowledge of a coding languages (such as Java, Python, C++, .Net, Scripting, SQL, R, and mark-up languages)
  • Experience of ITIL and service management delivery

Beneficial experience:

  • Defence customer experience
  • Technologies: Databases, Enterprise Service Bus, Messaging, CI/CD tool chains, Content Management, Web Applications, Mobile, Virtualisation, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big data analytics (e.g. Apache Spark or Hadoop), REST, API or micro services

The Defence software team and associated support is expected to be delivered from our Farnborough facility. Travel, initially at least, can be expected to meet with UK software leaders in other market sectors, customers and build relationships with Leidos’ US Software Factory leaders.

An SC clearance will be required to start, the successful applicant may need to attain a DV clearance in the future.
